At about 11:00 on April 15, the container labeled with the "1st Container of Railway Chuanshan Port Station" was unloaded from the rail-sea intermodal train from Huzhou to Zhoushan Port in Ningbo, marking that Chuanshan Port has become the third port with rail-sea intermodal transport capability in Ningbo Zhoushan Port after Beilun Port and Zhenhai Port.
Ningbo Zhoushan Port is an important terminal connecting the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. Its annual cargo throughput ranks first in the world for 11 consecutive years. In 2019, it realized a rail-sea intermodal traffic of more than 800,000 TEUs. Chuanshan Port Container Terminal of Ningbo Zhoushan Port is the second largest single container terminal in the world. However, due to the lack of connection with the railway network, the rail-sea intermodal train cannot directly enter and leave the port. The poor access has become the bottleneck restricting the development of rail-sea intermodal transport in the port.
On December 26, 2019, Ningbo Chuanshan Port Railway was put into operation, providing the necessary infrastructure for Chuanshan Port to launch rail-sea intermodal transportation. After the official opening of Chuanshan Port Station, the cargoes of rail-sea intermodal transport can directly enter and leave Chuanshan Port by train, enabling seamless connection between the "Belt" and the "Road" in the port. It is reported that Chuanshan Port Station has been designed with 4 receiving-departure tracks and 2 loading and unloading tracks, and equipped with 4 rail gantry cranes and 1 shunting locomotive in advance, which can meet the receiving-departure and loading-unloading of a complete rail-sea intermodal train. Its short-term and long-term design capacity for rail-sea intermodal transportation is 600,000 TEUs and 800,000 TEUs respectively.
"Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, the international economic and trade environment has changed. The opening of Chuanshan Port Station is of great significance for promoting the development of rail-sea intermodal transportation in Ningbo Zhoushan Port, improving the port's collection and distribution capacity, helping Ningbo Zhoushan Port to become a world-class leading port and better serving the exports and imports." said Huang Xianhai, Dean of the Economics School, Zhejiang University.
