On April 20, Nantong-Shanghai Railway (Zhaodian-Huangdu Section) began integrated commissioning & test, marking the entire railway is not far from its opening to traffic.
Nantong-Shanghai Railway is an important component of the coastal corridor, the main corridor in China's HSR network of "eight north-south corridors and eight east-west corridors" specified in China's Mid-and-Long-Term Railway Network Plan. The construction of the project is divided into two phases. Phase one is the Zhaodian-Huangdu Section which starts from Nantong City in Jiangsu Province and ends in Jiading District in Shanghai City, while phase two is the Taicang-Situan Section which starts from Taicang City, Jiangsu Province and ends in Fengxian District, Shanghai City. The Zhaodian-Huangdu Section of the Nantong-Shanghai Railway starts from the Zhaodian Station on the existing Nanjing-Qidong Railway, crosses the Yangtze River in the south, passes through Zhangjiagang City, Changshu City, Taicang City in Jiangsu Province, Jiading District in Shanghai City, Kunshan City in Jiangsu Province, and runs to Anting West Station, from where it joins the existing Beijing-Shanghai Railway and ends at Huangdu Station. It has a main line of 137.5 km long and a design speed of 200 km/h, with nine stations including Zhaodian Station, Nantong West Station, Zhangjiagang North Station, Zhangjiagang Station, Changshu Station, Taicang Port Station, Taicang Station, Taicang South Station and Anting West Station (with Changshu East Station reserved).
The construction of Zhaodian-Huangdu Section of Nantong-Shanghai Railway was commenced in August 2014. Since the beginning of this year, the railway sector has thoroughly implemented the decision and deployment of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on the coordinated promotion of the epidemic prevention and control and the economic and social development. Focusing on both epidemic prevention & control and project construction, it has strictly implemented the requirements for epidemic prevention and control, strengthened the quality and safety management of projects, orderly resumed work and production of projects, and accelerated their construction. With the hardworking of tens of thousands of railway builders, the subgrade, bridge, mainline track-laying, "communication, signal, power and electrification" works and station building works in Zhaodian-Huangdu Section of Nantong-Shanghai Railway have been basically completed and are eligible for integrated commissioning & test.
The opening-to-traffic of Zhaodian-Huangdu Section of Nantong-Shanghai Railway will further enhance the railway corridors crossing the Yangtze River, improve the railway network layout and the regional integrated transportation system in the Yangtze River Delta, which is of great significance for enhancing the radiating and driving role of Shanghai as a central hub and promoting the integrated regional development of the Yangtze River Delta.
