At about 9:00 on May 15, after nearly 4 years of hard construction, Hele Tunnel on the Yuxi-Mohan Section of China-Laos Railway was successfully holed through, which created conditions for the ongoing bridge erection and track laying works. In addition, the greening works on Yuxi-Mohan Section have proceeded in parallel, laying the foundation for the completion and opening-to-traffic of the whole railway on schedule.
Hele Tunnel is located in Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, with a total length of 7.9 km. It is the first long tunnel at the northernmost end of Yuxi-Mohan Section of China-Laos Railway. At the same time of the holing-through of Hele tunnel, the greening works on the Yuxi-Mohan Section of China-Laos Railway also proceed in full swing.
China-Laos Railway has a total length of more than 1,000 km, with a design speed of 160 km/h for passenger transportation and 120 km/h for freight transportation. The 508km long Yuxi-Mohan Section is expected to open to traffic at the end of 2021 along with the Boten-Vientiane Railway (Laos section). At that time, it will only take about 3 hours to travel from Kunming to Jinghong and it is possible to arrive in Vientiane, Laos in the morning when leaving Kunming at the previous night.
